Governance

The Governing Body of the school is an advisory group who's role is to work with the Head teacher to help the school provide the best possible education for its pupils.  The work of the Governing Body includes:

  • Clarifying and directing the strategy and development of the school
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
  • Holding the Head teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff

The Governing Body's role is to act as a 'critical friend' in order to guide, support and challenge the school. It comprises a mix of people who are well placed to do this: nationals and internationals, drawn from industry, education and elsewhere, who bring a broad set of skills to the governing body.  The Governing Body includes up to eight appointed governors, one parent representative elected by the parents, one staff representative elected by the school, and one 'ex officio' governor who represents FEBT.  The current list of governors is:

Meetings

The governing body meets at least once per term, more if needed, and additionally works through a number of working groups which meet as needed.  The governing body has its own articles of governance, but works as closely as possible to COBIS guide to good governance.  Meetings are minuted, and while these minutes are for the use of the governing body, parents and others can talk to the Principal, or the parent representative on the governing body, if they would like to understand more about the details of the work of the governing body.

The role of FEBT

The school and its premises are owned and operated by a Tunisian registered company called "Fondation pour l'Enseignement Britannique en Tunisie" (FEBT) SARL.  This was started by several parents who had previously had children in the British system, and who wished to see that approach to education continue in Tunisia.  The majority of shareholders are present or previous parents.  FEBT has legal responsibility for the school, but shares the strategic and management development of the school with the Governing Body. This collaboration gives a structure that responds well to the needs of the Tunisian authorities and requirements of a British school.
